How to Check Vehicle Owner & RC Details by Number Plate in India (2026)

6 min readUpdated 2026-07

Every vehicle in India is registered in VAHAN, the national vehicle database maintained by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH). From a registration number (number plate) you can look up the vehicle’s make and model, registering RTO, fuel type, registration date, insurance validity and pending challans.

This guide shows the official ways to check vehicle and owner details by number plate, what information is and is not public, and how transporters verify hundreds of RCs at once instead of one at a time.

What is VAHAN?

VAHAN is the centralised vehicle registration system operated by MoRTH through the National Informatics Centre (NIC). Almost every RTO in India records registration, fitness, insurance, PUC and permit data into VAHAN, which is why a single number plate can return a nationwide record.

The public-facing services built on VAHAN are the parivahan.gov.in web portal, the official mParivahan mobile app, and the eChallan system for traffic fines.

What details you can check by number plate

Owner name is shown only partially. Individual owner personal details are masked for privacy.

  • Make, model and vehicle class (for example LMV or commercial).
  • Registration date, registering RTO and state.
  • Fuel type and vehicle age.
  • Insurance company and policy validity date.
  • PUC (Pollution Under Control) validity.
  • Registration and fitness expiry for commercial vehicles.

How to check on the mParivahan app (fastest)

mParivahan is the official RTO app from MoRTH, available on Android and iOS.

It is the quickest way to verify a single vehicle on the road.

  • Install mParivahan and open the RC Search option.
  • Enter the full registration number, for example RJ14AB1234.
  • The app returns make and model, RTO, registration and fitness dates, and insurance validity.

How to check on the VAHAN / Parivahan portal

Go to parivahan.gov.in and open “Know Your Vehicle Details”.

Owner personal data is masked; you still see enough to confirm the vehicle is genuine and its documents are valid.

  • Sign in with your mobile number and OTP (login is now required for full details).
  • Enter the registration number to see the RC summary.

How to check pending challans

Traffic fines are tracked separately in the eChallan system.

Checking challans before buying a used vehicle, or before onboarding a driver’s vehicle, avoids inheriting unpaid fines.

  • Go to echallan.parivahan.gov.in.
  • Enter the vehicle number, driving-licence number or challan number to see pending and disposed challans.

Why manual lookups do not scale for fleets

Checking one vehicle on mParivahan is easy. Verifying the RC, insurance and permit status of every vehicle and every subcontracted truck, on an ongoing basis, is not something you can do by hand.

Fleets and logistics platforms instead use the Vahan API to verify RC details programmatically and in bulk, and to re-check validity automatically, so an expired insurance or fitness certificate is caught before the vehicle moves.

Frequently asked questions

Can I find the owner’s name from a number plate in India?

Only partially. Since privacy rules were tightened, VAHAN and mParivahan mask individual owner details. You can confirm the vehicle’s make, RTO, registration and insurance validity, but full owner personal data is not publicly shown.

What is the difference between VAHAN and mParivahan?

VAHAN is the underlying national vehicle registration database. mParivahan is the official mobile app that lets citizens look up vehicle details from that database. Both are from MoRTH and NIC.

How can I check a vehicle’s insurance status?

Enter the registration number in mParivahan or the “Know Your Vehicle Details” service on parivahan.gov.in, which shows the insurer and policy validity date recorded in VAHAN.

How do transporters verify many RCs at once?

They use the Vahan API for bulk, automated RC verification, checking registration, insurance and fitness for every vehicle programmatically and re-checking validity on a schedule, rather than looking up each vehicle manually.
